"Solutions Exist" to Women's Homelessness

Yes, we can end homelessness!  Solutions Exist, a civic education project to empower communities with the tools to end women’s homelessness.  This workshop series allows participants to explore their ideas and misconceptions about homelessness in a structured, safe space. Through discussion and hands-on activities, participants learn about the social issues that contribute to homelessness and that the permanent supportive housing model can solve this crisis. DWC is now reaching out to high schools and civic organizations throughout Los Angeles to host workshops that spread the message. Click here to find out more.

Fighting Human Trafficking

The Downtown Women's Center is working in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Unity Coalition to identify victims of human trafficking.  Click here to find out more.

Downtown Women's Action Coalition

The dramatic increase of women and families living in Central City East, combined with the threats to women and children’s health and safety in the area and the shortage of housing and services, led to the formation of the Downtown Women’s Action Coalition (DWAC) in April 2001.  Our mission is to empower women who live and work downtown to influence public policy change that promotes health, safety, and economic and social justice for women through collective action, public education, community building, advocacy and leadership opportunities.  Click here to find out more.

Needs Assessments

After successfully obtaining funding for a collaborative effort to provide emergency shelter and support services, DWAC determined that a thorough needs assessment was imperative in order to adequately address the many complex problems that women face. It was this realization that led to the planning, design and execution of the Downtown Women's Needs Assessment.  The first Needs Assessment was completed in 2001, and was repeated in 2004 and 2007.  Please click here for reports and findings.
